Dr. Eric Hughes | Hughes Moves | Naturopathic Holistic Sports Medicine

When I started pursing athletics and sports, I had no a care in the world what happened to my body. It is not surprising that this didn’t last very long, which affected my ability to perform and even function day-to-day. From this I created what is now Hughes Moves.

With this platform, I have carefully curated the very modalities that I believe are the foundation to getting you back to the sports that you love with strength and confidence.

It has literally transformed my ability to perform, my perspective on fitness, and I am also able to translate this throughout my life. As such, I have been able to provide the same impact for the patients and clients I have served to this day.

Here’s how it happened…

My athletic spirit started with CrossFit. If you’ve ever been part of a CrossFit gym, it is truly a community. Reinforcing and encouraging positive habits, pushing through mental and physical barriers, always wanting to be better — the works. It wasn’t long enough until where my “daily exercise” turned into “training.” I essentially became an athlete in the sport of fitness, in which my dream was to compete in the CrossFit Games. Stepping up to such high intensity, I also had my blinders on. Training rigorously with no sense of recovery, I soon found myself subjected to little muscle “tweaks” here and there. A small hip thing, a constant shoulder ache, but I kept on going.

I’ll never forget the first time I threw out my back.

I was still in college at the ripe age of 20 years old, going through a seemingly normal training day of performing heavy deadlifts. And as always, it that last one rep where I felt it — the "Oh sh*t" moment mid-rep as something gives away, proceeding by a dreadful chill throughout the entire body.

After a couple minutes, I found that I was still able to walk around and move my limbs and figured I was fine. But of course, that next morning was relentless. Searing pain that locked up my entire back, barely able to get out of bed let alone bend over even an inch. I knew I had done something wrong, because that this wasn't your typical workout soreness.

Visiting the local Chiropractor and Physical Therapist, I was told to take it easy. But I was an athlete and I needed to get back to my training. So after a 2 short weeks of half-ass recovery to where I was semi-able to move around and ignore the pain, I got right back into the gym.

And that was just the beginning…

After that injury, training was never the same again. I thought doing more of the same would fix my problems — but it didn’t. Injuries compounded much faster. So many times I had to stop in the middle of my workouts because my back would lock. Competing had become a distant memory.

It even got to the point where this affected my daily activities. Sitting for no more than 5 minutes caused relentless pain. Hiking or snowboarding would flare everything up, to where I couldn’t keep up with my friends on some of the things that I used to enjoy with ease. I’d wake up and the first thing I felt was my pain, thinking to myself, “Is this now my life?” Left without confidence, I had essentially lost my identity as an athlete.

Once I started Naturopathic Medical school, I was on a mission.

In each class, I strived to find how I could continue supporting my athletic potential to the best of my ability. I joined the school's Sports Medicine and Physical Medicine clubs to soak up as much knowledge and secrets that could give me the answers I was seeking. I learned the fundamental principles of Naturopathic Medicine including addressing the root cause, treating the whole person, and prevention, which provided a brand new perspective on my own physical ails.

And guess what — I found those answers. I carefully curated the very modalities that worked almost magically in eliminating my back pain. One of those in particular was Revolution In Motion, which completely shattered my paradigm on what I thought was true fitness and athletic performance.

With consistency and application of what I learned, I literally felt my back pain melting away. I was finally getting back to training and competing in the sports that I love. In the gym, I could perform exercises that I once avoided like the plague with complete confidence. My recovery improved dramatically, where I could increase my training volume and maintain it with ease. Where my competitors were feeling gassed and worn out, I was able to tap into a second wind.

This was the start of a new chapter of athletics and performance in my life, which has become the foundation for Hughes Moves. With this platform, I could share my knowledge so that others are able to achieve success in their own athletic endeavors.

I am extremely grateful to have worked with athletes from all walks of life. Weekend warriors, football players, ultra-marathon runners, disc golfers, martial artists, CrossFitters, olympic weightlifters, cyclists... the list goes on. Each one coming in for one reason or another, but all still with the same burning desire inside: To get back out and play with strength and confidence.

It is humbling to see the methods I use myself to be successfully implemented across a myriad of sports. Not only in a manner that will give them success in the short-term, but to also provide a foundation of resiliency that will stand the test of time. I believe longevity is the core element behind true athletic potential.

My life has forever changed for the better.

These days, I am able to maintain the same level and dedication as an athlete, but now as a professional disc golfer. I am out on the course at on average 4 days per week, playing and competing with friends as much as I desire. On top of this, I am still able to spend time with my partner Alyssa and our two dogs Brody and Milo, run a Naturopathic Sports Medicine practice in Seattle, WA, and give back to the local Disc Golf community by running events throughout the year.

All of this is possible because I decided that no amount of back pain or injury will take control of my life and keep me sidelined.

And now, it’s my goal to help people create the life that will fulfill their truest athletic potential.

And it can happen for you, too.

I’m no different than you. I had to figure out everything on my own through continuous trial and error, and often times all by myself.

I made it a point to take control of my low back pain and continue playing the sports I love with strength and confidence. And I've helped a lot of people achieve the same goal.
